Philosophers Johann Georg Hamann (1730-1788) and Gustav Teichmüller (1832-1888) represent two different generations and ages of German philosophical traditions, but significant time periods of their lives and thinking they have been closely related to cultural history of Latvia and Baltic. However different were their philosophical thoughts they were united in respect to spoken and written word and history of language, which is depository of new possibilities not only of memory of culture but also of understanding of the world. Human mind is language, logos – these words by Hamann reveal not only his theories of language and experience and discovery of historic dimensions in Teichmüller’s research of history of concepts, but also highlights the problem of passing on language and experience and important role libraries and publishing play in it today.
