Aprakstītais ceļojums uzsākts 1939. gada jūnijā un ilgst sešus mēnešus, tā laikā šķērsojot Turciju, Irānu un Afganistānu, lai sasniegtu Kafiristānu. Ella Maijāra automašīnā ceļo kopā ar draudzeni Annemariju Švarcenbahu (Annemarie Schwarzenbach; tekstā - Kristīna), jo vēlas tikt uzņemta etnogrāfu biedrībā un palīdzēt ceļabiedrenei izārstēties no narkotiku atkarības. Atlasītajās nodaļās darbība norisinās Afganistānā, tādēļ arī galvenās tulkojuma problēmas saistītas ar šī reģiona ainavu aprakstiem, ģeogrāfiskajiem nosaukumiem un īpašvārdiem, kā arī atsevišķiem svešvārdiem, kuru izcelsme tekstā nav norādīta un detalizētāki paskaidrojumi nav sniegti. Afganistānas daba valsts ģeogrāfiskā stāvokļa un politiskās situācijas dēļ ne tikai latviešu, bet arī pasaules literatūrā un dabaszinātnēs nav detalizēti aprakstīta, tādēļ bakalaura darba autore vēlējusies iepazīstināt nelielu daļu latviešu lasītāju ne tikai ar ceļojumu aprakstu kā žanru, bet arī ar Afganistānas specifiskajām ainavām. The title of the research paper is The Issue of Translating Extracts From the Travelogue “La Voie Cruelle” by Ella Maillart. The first part describes the biography and creative work of Ella Maillart, including a summary of the book La Voie Cruelle whose extracts have been translated. The second chapter examines the theoretical aspects of translation and opinions of modern theorists. The specificity of the travelogue is analyzed using different methods and strategies of translation. The third part presents the problems and solutions of translating the travelogue. The sub-divisions review the reproduction of place-names and proper names in Latvian, equivalence and untranslatability, the original writings and translation of idioms. The fourth chapter consists of the translation from French into Latvian of extracts from the travelogue La Voie Cruelle written by Ella Maillart whose action occurs in Afghanistan. In the research process different theoretical methods and strategies of translation were used, including opinions of Umberto Eco, Lawrence Venuti, Paul Ricoeur, Ieva Zauberga and Jānis Sīlis. Reproduction of place-names and proper names has been estimated as the most successful. The greatest difficulties were found in the transcription of names in Persian into Latvian as well as translating Afghan realia. The author has concluded that the process of translating was complicated because of the lack of information on Persian language in Latvia, suggesting studying the subject more detailed in foreign countries. Le titre de ce mémoire est La problématique de traduction dans les extraits du récit de voyage „La Voie Cruelle” par Ella Maillart. (The Issue of Translating Extracts From the Travelogue “La Voie Cruelle” by Ella Maillart.) Dans la première partie du travail l’auteur a décrit la biographie et l’oeuvre d’Ella Maillart, y compris le compte rendu du livre La Voie Cruelle dont les extraits ont été traduits. Le deuxième chapitre étudie les aspects théoriques de traduction et les opinions des théoriciens de nos jours. La spécificité du récit de voyage est examinée en utilisant les différentes méthodes et stratégies de traduction. La troisième partie présente la problématique et la solution en traduisant le récit de voyage. Dans les sous-chapitres est décrite la reproduction des noms de lieux et des noms propres en letton, l’équivalence et l’intraduisibilité, la rédaction originale et la traduction des locutions. Le quatrième chapitre contient la traduction du français vers le letton du récit de voyage La Voie Cruelle écrit par Ella Maillart dont l’action se produit en Afghanistan. En faisant la recherche les différentes méthodes et stratégies théorétiques de traduction ont été utilisées, y compris les opinions d’Umberto Eco, Lawrence Venuti, Paul Ricoeur, Ieva Zauberga et Jānis Sīlis. La reproduction des noms de lieux et des noms propres a été estimée comme la plus réussie. La plus grande difficulté a été constatée dans la transcription des noms du persan vers le letton, ainsi que dans la traduction des realia afghanes. L’auteur a conclu que le processus de traduction a été compliqué à cause de l’information minimale sur la langue persane en Lettonie, en suggérant de faire la recherche plus détaillée à l’étranger.
