Vecāķi ir sens zvejnieku ciems. Vecāķu kūrorts dibināts 1898. gadā, kad pēc A. Dombrovska lūguma domēņu valde atļāva celt Vecāķu jūrmalā vasarnīcas un piešķīra gruntsgabalus 99 gadu nomā. Līdz 1914. gadam tika uzceltas ap 100 vasarnīcu, daudzas no tām nopostītas 1. pasaules kara laikā
