Rožu laukums savu nosaukumu un funkcijas laika gaitā ir mainījusi vairākkārt. Jau 1797. gada Liepājas plānā šis laukums ir apzīmēts ar Neue Markt jeb latviski Jaunā tirgus nosaukumu, kas tur ir pastāvējis no 17. gadsimta beigām. Taču 1910. gadā pilsētas vara šeit nolēma izveidot atklātu dārzu ar rozēm un tika iestādīti ap 500 rožu stādu, kamēr tirgu pārceļ uz pārbūvēto Pētera tirgus laukumu. 1911. gadā tas tika nosaukts par Rožu laukumu un kļuva par Liepājas sirdi
