Abstract (latvian):
Abstract (english):
„The forms of the public entertainment in the coffee houses of the 20th century 20‘s, 30‘s in the view of Latvian press‖ gives an insight of the way how independent press, political press, tabloid press and authoritarian press reflected on the forms of the public entertainment in the coffee houses and what was the attitude towards that. Not only it changed the situation in the country, but also the lifestyle of people after Latvia regained independence in the 1918. The coffee houses became a regular meeting place for various people, became the place of entertainment. According to the statistics, the number of coffee houses in Latvia increased at the beginning of the 20th century. The coffee house was an institution where many forms of public entertainment took place, for example, benefit night, five o‘clock tea, carnival, dancing party, cabaret etc. People attended theaters, cinemas, bingo clubs, casinos, racetracks, as well as cafes and nightclubs. The situation of the press during the 20‘s 30‘s was very productive in terms of quantity and diversity. Representatives of the press wrote about the dynamic and changing society of urban life. For some of the press it was important to write about events in the coffee houses, but for other social and cultural aspects that were connected with the public entertainment forms in the coffee houses seemed to be more important. The distance of time allows us to evaluate the techniques by which the press formed public perception of entertainment, this time narrowing down the research to the public forms of entertainment in the coffee houses. Each of the types of the press focused differently on the public entertainment, although the object of the analysis was neither a political, nor a social tool. Events in the coffee houses was an entertaining topic, so it could be the same for all of the types of the press. Since the press coverage of this object was different, it looks like public entertainment in the coffee houses was an important topic in the society which interacted with the press.
