Simfonijas kopējā hr. - 44'16". Nenovēršamā spēka - Likteņa tēls - P. Čaikovski iedvesmojis visu dzīvi. Arī 5. simfonijas pamatā ir Likteņa ideja. Simfonija tapa ļoti īsā laikā: iecerēta 1888. gada martā/ aprīlī, augusta vidū instrumentēta, bet novembra vidū pirmoreiz atskaņta Pēterburgā un Prāgā.
