Sonātes kopējā hr. - 16'34". Nosaukumu "Mēnesnīcas sonāte" devis komponista laikabiedrs dzejnieks Ludvigs Relšatbs ( Rolštabs ), bet pats autors par atbilstošāko uzskatīja apzīmējumu - "Sonāte - fantāzija" ( Sonata quasi una fantasia ). Daudzi centušies atšifrēt sonātes saturu, saistot to ar mēnesīcas nakti uz Firvaldštates ezera Šveicē. Savukārt komponita biogrāfi saista to ar viņa nelaimīgo mīlestību pret viņa skolnieci Džuljetu Gvičardi.
