Abstract (english):
This Bachelor’s thesis, "Nonverbal Communication of Latvian Prime Ministers within Domestic and International Contexts: A Case Study of Krišjānis Kariņš and Evika Siliņa in Crisis Situations,” investigates the role of nonverbal communication in political leadership from the time Latvia gained its independence until March 2025. Drawing on the theories of Goffman (1959), Mehrabian (1972), and Ekman (2003), this study examines how nonverbal cues, including facial expressions, posture, and gestures, impact political credibility during crises. The research analyses Latvia’s political communication following the restoration of its independence in 1991, focusing on the leadership styles of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš during the COVID-19 pandemic and Evika Siliņa in the context of heightened regional tensions and teacher salaries. The study compares domestic and international nonverbal strategies, utilising secondary sources and full-length video analyses, to evaluate their effectiveness in reinforcing leadership trust and authority in modern Latvian governance. Sixteen full-length speeches were analysed to identify nonverbal cues in both domestic and international settings. This study demonstrates that Krišjānis Kariņš and Evika Siliņa adjust their communication to the specific situation they are in. Krišjānis Kariņš is confident, at times more restrained and composed in his nonverbal cues, whereas Evika Siliņa demonstrates empathy and integrates assertiveness when speaking with diverse audiences. Both Prime Ministers change their nonverbal cues to adapt their communication to context; when speaking in English, they employ diplomatic nonverbal cues. In Evika Siliņa's case, her accent is more noticeable; she compensates for it with strong eye contact and articulate speech. These findings demonstrate that nonverbal cues play a crucial role in their political work, particularly in crisis situations. Furthermore, they emphasise the importance of strategic image governance in conveying transparency and demonstrating leadership abilities. The paper consists of 3 chapters, 9 subchapters, conclusions, a bibliography, 22 images, and 2 annexes. Keywords: Political leadership, Evika Siliņa, Krišjānis Kariņš, nonverbal communication, international communication, domestic communication, crisis communication.
