Abstract (english):
Title of the Thesis: Application of Machine Learning Technologies for Disease Detection in Indoor and Outdoor Plants Author: Joel Mugambwa Supervisor: Dr.sc.ing. Ginta Majore Length of the Thesis: 58 pages, 6 tables, 9 figures, 50 bibliographic references, 1 appendix. Keywords: PLANT DISEASE DETECTION, TRANSFER LEARNING, MOBILENETV2, CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORKS, IMAGE CLASSIFICATION Artificial intelligence and computer vision have become transformative technologies across the agricultural sector, enabling automated systems that can perceive, analyse, and diagnose plant conditions at a scale and speed beyond human capability. Among these, deep learning– based image classification has emerged as a particularly powerful tool for translating raw visual data into actionable agronomic decisions. Plant diseases cause up to 40% of global food crop losses annually, with economic damage exceeding USD 220 billion. Existing automated detection systems focus almost exclusively on outdoor crops, leaving indoor plants largely unaddressed. This thesis presents the development and evaluation of a machine learning system for classifying plant diseases across both indoor and outdoor plant species from digital leaf images. A MobileNetV2 convolutional neural network pre-trained on ImageNet was fine-tuned using a two-phase transfer learning protocol on the PlantVillage dataset, comprising 54,306 labelled images across 38 classes from 14 plant species. The model achieved a peak validation accuracy of 96.6%, a final overall validation accuracy of 97.57% across all 38 classes, and a macro-averaged F1-score of 0.9682. The trained model was deployed as a web application named LeafGuard, which accepts user-uploaded leaf photographs and returns the top-three disease predictions enriched with descriptions, prevention strategies, and treatment recommendations in under one second. The results confirm that transfer learning applied to a lightweight CNN architecture provides an effective and deployable solution to the plant disease classification problem, and that research-grade models can be successfully translated into practical diagnostic tools. The results of this thesis have not been published or presented at conferences.
