Iela minēta 14. gadsimtā kā "Sīktirgotāju iela" (platea institorum), 1418. gadā - de kremerstrate. Ielas nosaukums Krāmu iela (Kramerstrasse) aizgūts no vācu "Krämer" – sīktirgotājs, jo pie Krāmu ielas telpas tirdzniecībai no Rīgas rātes nomājuši krāmu un sīkpreču tirgotāji. Latviski līdz 20. gadsimta sākumam iela saukta par Krāmeru /arī Sīkumu/ ielu, kopš 20. gs. 20. gadiem Krāmu iela. Vecā apbūve gruntsgabalos nr. 1 un 2 nopostīta Otrā pasaules kara laikā.
