Latvijas kino vēsturē Motociklu vasara izceļas kā izteikta „operatoru filma", jo Uldis Brauns, pats būdams diplomēts kinooperators, pieaicināja divus dokumentālā kino profesionāļus – Ivaru Selecki un Kalvi Zalcmani -, viņi apzināti nolemj filmu uzņemt melnbaltu, filmēt dažādās Latvijas ainavās, kas nav vēl uz ekrāna banalizētas, un pat galvenos varoņus izvēlas galvenokārt pēc izskata, nevis aktiermeistarības (galvenās lomas tēlotāja Inese Jansone tobrīd ir 15 gadus veca skolniece). Darbība bieži filmēta ar divām kamerām, lai maksimāli izmantotu „pirmā dubla" improvizācijas svaigumu, kuru neprofesionāliem aktieriem varbūt neizdotos atkārtot. „Pa stingriem, pārbaudītiem pamatiem man nebūtu interesanti staigāt," teica režisors Uldis Brauns, argumentējot šīs filmas eksperimentālo garu.

Latvijas dokumentālā kino klasiķa Ulda Brauna vienīgā spēlfilma, veidota režisora pārliecībā, ka aktierfilmās līdz šim pietrūcis „īstuma sajūtas", ko var sniegt dokumentālistu pieredze. 18 gadu dzimšanas dienā Mārim vecāki uzdāvina motociklu, un viņš kopā ar draugiem izbraucienā apdzen kāzu mašīnu. Līgava Inese tiek apprecināta bez mīlestības, tāpēc ļauj Mārim sevi nozagt un dodas līdzi romantiskā ceļojumā, pārlaižot nakti nomaļās lauku mājās. Nākamo nakti abi pavada mežā pie ugunskura, un no rīta Inese ir pazudusi, bet Māris zvēr atrast viņu un pierādīt savu tikko dzimušo mīlestību.

They deliberately decided to shoot the film in black and white, filmed various not yet clichéd landscape scenes, and even selected the main actors based on their appearance rather than their acting skills (Inese Jansone, who played the main character, was a 15-year-old schoolgirl at the time). The action was often filmed with two cameras to make the most of the fresh improvisational quality of the first take, which non-professional actors may not have been able to repeat a second time around. "I don't find it interesting to walk on solid, tested ground," commented Brauns regarding the film's experimental spirit.

The only fiction film by Latvian documentary film classic Uldis Brauns, made because he believed that fiction films lacked the "feelings of authenticity" that documentary filmmakers could provide. On his 18th birthday, Māris receives a motorcycle from his parents, and, while driving around with his friends, they pass a wedding car. The bride, Inese, is entering a loveless marriage, so she allows Māris to "steal" her from the wedding reception. They take a romantic ride and end up spending the night at a remote house in the countryside. They spend the following night in the forest by a campfire, but in the morning Inese is missing. Māris swears to find her and prove his newfound love.
