Filmas uzņemšanas laikā režisors Aivars Freimanis ir jau pieredzējis dokumentālists, viens no vēlāk slavenā poētiskā stila pamatlicējiem, un arī stāstu par Zaķusalu viņš kopā ar līdzautoru Dāvi Sīmani sākotnēji iecerēja tieši kā dokumentālo filmu; spēlfilmu pieredzes abiem autoriem nebija. Tomēr, virknējot dažādas epizodes Zaķusalas noslēgtajā pasaulītē, izkristalizējās nepieciešamība pēc kopējās dramaturģijas, un režisors pieaicināja divus jaunus, skatītājiem vēl nepazīstamus aktiermākslas studentus, ļaujot viņiem bez scenārija improvizēt „dotajos apstākļos". Rezultāts ir harmoniska dokumentalitātes un aktierkino sintēze, patiesa un nevainīgi tīra laikmeta skice, kuras autori patstāvīgu meklējumu ceļā nonākuši sava laika pasaules kino avangardā.

He and cinematographer Dāvis Sīmanis had hoped to make this film about Zaķusala a documentary; neither had any experience in creating fiction films. However, as they strung together various episodes filmed in the insular little world of Zaķusala, the need for a uniting story emerged, and Freimanis invited two still-unknown acting students to join the project, allowing them to improvise "in the given circumstances" without a script. The result is a harmonious synthesis of documentary and dramatic cinema, a genuine and innocently pure sketch of an era whose creators arrived at the avantgarde of cinema in their independent search for an artistic path.

A feature film made with documentary film techniques – a rare case in Latvian cinema. Apple in the River tells about Zaķusala, a literal island of the "old life" in the middle of rapidly growing Riga. However, the surrounding industrialisation inevitably encroaches into Zaķusala as well, and the film revolves around the examination of that environment. The main characters, Janka and Anita, are only catalysts for the events depicted, although gradually their love story comes to the fore.
